13 cars covered over 1 million kilometers

Most drivers prefer to get rid of cars after mileage shows 100,000 — 150,000. And if the car travels 300,000 km or more, they already consider it completely unusable. However, the condition of the car depends largely on its owner, so there are those who have driven 1 million or more kilometers. Here are some examples.

1. Moskvich-2140 since 1976 — 1,000,000 km.

Oddly enough, but in the ranking there is also a Soviet-made car. German Gerhart Schott bought his Muscovite in 1976 and drives it to this day. He changed the engine and complained about the car’s tendency to rust, but said everything else was fine.

2. Mercedes-Benz E-Class W124 since 1992 — 1,000,000 km.

A Daimler-Benz worker bought a diesel car in 1992. Soon after, he planned to resell it, but realized that he did not want to part with it. The W124 is still in excellent condition today, although it was involved in an accident. So far, its owner Michael Nickel has spent around €58,500 on repairs to the Mercedes and €53,800 on fuel.

3. Saab 900 SPG since 1989 — 1,600,000 km.

For several years now, Saab has not pleased the public with new cars, but numerous fans of the brand are doing their best to save «disappearing specimens». One of them is a Wisconsin salesman, Peter Gilbert. At the wheel of his «friend» Saab 900 SPG, he drives about 1,600,000 km, after which he donates it to the museum. By then Peter had replaced 88 tires, gearbox and some small parts. Unlike the body, on which the years are clearly visible, the turbo engine has been preserved.

4. Porsche 356 1964 — 1,600,000 km.

Decades ago, Guy Newmark, owner of an old Porsche 356, vowed to drive only that car for the rest of his life. In 2013, the mileage already exceeds 1,600,000 km. After information about the record appeared on the Internet, the Porsche was stolen, but, fortunately, was soon found and returned to the owner. Guy repairs the damaged car and starts driving it again. Every 5,000 km, Newmark performs maintenance, changes filters and oil, carefully monitors the condition of the car, avoiding breakdowns.

5. BMW 325i since 1990 — 1,600,000 km.

In the 1990s, BMW and Mobil did a fun experiment. Its essence is as follows — to check how the new BMW 325i will behave in natural conditions on synthetic oil. 4 years fly, and the mileage shows 1,600,000 km. Then they remove the engine from the car, register the degree of wear of the parts and carry out a bunch of other manipulations. Experts come to the conclusion that after a serious run, the engine is like new, which means that the oil is of good quality. And although this is nothing more than a marketing ploy, it does not detract from the capabilities and potential of the 6-cylinder BMW engine.

6. Honda Accord since 1990 — 1,600,000 km.

According to the owner of this vintage Honda Accord, the model is virtually rust-free when compared to other cars of the time. In the car, only the steering wheel trim and upholstery in the cabin deteriorated, otherwise everything is fine. However, this is the merit of the owner, who carefully monitors his condition, regularly replaces worn parts and conducts maintenance in a timely manner. The car is still with the original transmission and engine! Not surprisingly, after more than 20 years of active use, Honda gave this American a brand new Accord.

7. Toyota Tacoma from 2000 to 1,600,000 km.

Last year, Toyota gave the owner of this model a brand new car. Since 2000, the car has driven almost 1 million miles. When the mileage shows 965,000 km, the owner has an accident and has to replace the crankshaft, but now the car is in motion. The dealer who sells this Toyota Tacoma for a new car plans to display the record in a museum.

8. Dodge Ram 3500 since 1995 — 1,600,000 km.

Tom Olding has driven over 1 million miles in his 1995 Dodge Ram. He frequently hauls loads in his pickup truck, further proof of the reliability and power of the 3.5-litre Cummins diesel engine. All these years, Olding only replaced the clutch due to a broken fifth gear, but never repaired the engine. Change oil every 15,000 km.

9. Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD since 2006 — 1,900,000 km.

Many Americans love to travel around the country in a pickup truck because this vehicle allows them to attach a caravan to it, making the journey a fairy tale. Therefore, in 2006, the Pennington family purchased a new Chevrolet Silverado. Then they do not suspect that he will fly around America as many as 7 times, and they do not think that on the last trip he will run 1 million miles.

10. Lincoln Towncar since 1983 — 2,000,000 km.

Chet Belale’s car can be safely compared to a land yacht, the owner of which loves to travel around America for pleasure. Ulysses, in his travels, Chet never notices that he has traveled over 2 million kilometers. He admits that the Lincoln Towncar has never let him down. For all these years, he changed only the transmission and did not miss a single MOT.

11. Volkswagen Beetle since 1963 — 2300000 km.

The unremarkable Beetle also appears in the ranking of «millionaires» by mileage, but all thanks to the owner’s accuracy and regular technical inspection. Albert Klein is the holder of a miniature record, drives 2,300,000 km in his car and does not complain about anything.

Mercedes-Benz 240D

12. Mercedes-Benz 240D since 1976 — 4,600,000 km.

This car, which is now in the museum of a German company, has traveled 4,600,000 km! Just imagine how much it costs! According to the owner of the sedan Paul Harman, the only thing he did was change the oil every 5000 km.

13. Volvo P1800 since 1966 — 4,800,000 km.

Almost 5 million kilometers behind the wheel of a car is, to put it mildly, an incredible achievement! This Volvo P1800 is a record holder! Back in 1966, Erv Gordon donated his annual income to this car. He bought it on Friday, and on Monday he brought the car for the first technical inspection, because he had driven 2,400 km over the weekend. Since then, Volvo has covered 4,800,000 km. Every day, an American travels 200 km to work and home, and he also loves to travel. Gordon says the secret to a car’s longevity is to wash it after every winter ride. The mileage of the car is listed in the Guinness Book of Records.
